Power & Light District

"...nationally recognized urban district..."

The award-winning Power & Light District is part of the current downtown Kansas City, Missouri, renaissance. In an ongoing effort since 2005, Young + Dring have participated in the revitalization of seven city blocks which include restaurants, shops and live music venues. Responsible for the design of the urban fabric within this nationally recognized district, the Kansas City vibe is authentic. Anchored by the convention center, the new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts and the Sprint Arena, the district completes the hub of visitor experience. Residential towers represent a shift from an entertainment destination to a mixed-use neighborhood. Vibrant streetscapes, inviting plazas and the developer's signature “Live!” venue are rich public realms designed as a series of connected outdoor experiences. Additionally, a verdant urban forest was achieved with the installation of 180 Ginkgo trees - historically the largest single implementation of streetscape in downtown. Focused on tree health and long-term growth, custom planters and metal tree-surrounds were functionally and aesthetically designed by Young + Dring. By creating a walkable district, re-knitting downtown social patterns, and incorporating notable landscape architectural elements, Young + Dring are contributing to the transformation of downtown into a greener and more vibrant Kansas City.
